Mumbai, also known officially as Bombay until 1995, is the capital city of Maharashtra, India. Located on the west coast of India on a natural harbor, Mumbai remains the most populated and wealthiest city in India.
The modern skyscraper cityscape is preceded by the iconic stone arch on Mumbai Harbor, making the Gateway of India, which was constructed in 1924 by the British. The majestic gateway is located on the waterfront, creating a scenic view for tourists.
The Elephanta Islands are home to the Elephanta caves, which were dedicated to the Hindu God, Shiva, and still are one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites. Another of UNESCO'S heritage sites is the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, a colonial British landmark building that showcases the Mughal architecture and the Gothic Revival. The Bombay High Court, build with castle features, is home to octagonal turrets that intrigues visiting tourists. The iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya is an ethnographic and historical museum that features Mumbai's history and ethnicity.
For excellent antique shopping and collections, visit the famous Chor Bazaar. For textile pieces, the Mangaldas Market is renowned for its comprehensive collection. As for beautiful jewelry pieces, the Zaveri Bazaar is the place to go.
The Chaupati beach is a scenic attraction site for tourists, as it marks the end of the colorful Marine Drive. Another attractive spot in Mumbai is the Sanjay Gandhi National Park that features ancient Buddhist caves made during the first century.

When to visit Mumbai

The climate of Mumbai is tropical and is characterized by hot, humid weather. Mumbai can be visited any time during the year, but the peak tourist period is between May and June, just before the monsoon rains set in between June and September. In August and September on different dates, the locals celebrate the elephant-headed god, Ganesh, amid long colorful processions. From December to January, the weather is dry, warm, and pleasant during the day, and mild in the evenings and is an excellent time to visit Mumbai. In February, Mumbai celebrates the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival complete in music, dance, and literature showcasing via various visual arts and crafts.
